St. Petersburg is a city created from water and stone. And if the grandeur of the Neva fascinates, then the quiet beauty of the canals enchants with its intimacy. One of them, the Griboyedov Canal, not only flows next to the Express Sadovaya hotel, it is a silent witness to the centuries-old history of the city, its ups and downs.
Before becoming the Griboyedov Canal, this water artery bore the name Krivusha - because of its winding outlines. Back in the early 18th century, when St. Petersburg was founded, the Krivusha River flowed here, surrounded by dense forests.
With the founding of the city, the river became a natural border between the Admiralty and Slobodskaya parts.
During the reign of Catherine the Great, Krivusha underwent significant changes. Its banks became stone, new bridges were built, and the river itself was deepened and straightened, turning it into a canal. In 1766 it received the name Catherine's.
The 19th century brought a new wave of transformations to the canal. The embankments were lined with majestic buildings, among which appeared the Savior on Spilled Blood, standing on the site of the mortal wound of Emperor Alexander II.
Nikolsky Market, where the Express Sadovaya Hotel is now located, was also built during this period.
The name “Griboyedov Canal” was assigned to this water artery only in 1923, in honor of the Russian writer and foreign figure A.S. Griboyedov, whose house is located on the embankment.
According to another version, the canal was named so in honor of the chief engineer Griboyedov, who led the reconstruction of the embankment.
Today the Griboyedov Canal is one of the most picturesque areas of St. Petersburg. A walk along its embankments or a boat excursion is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the history of the city, see famous sights and feel the unique atmosphere of Northern Venice.
