St. Petersburg is called the Venice of the North for a reason. The city is located on many small islands, separated by rivers and artificially created canals.
Canals with granite embankments add a special charm to St. Petersburg, complementing its unique architecture.
All canals in St. Petersburg are connected to rivers in the city. Moreover, some of the canals are “former” small rivers and streams that were renamed and improved. And the Griboedov Canal is one such example.
Laid along the bed of the Deaf River (Krivushi), it began at the Champs of Mars from the Moika River, washing the banks of the Savior on Spilled Blood and the Kazan Cathedral. It flows in the Central and Admiralteysky districts of the city, delighting with its well-groomed appearance tourists who decided to rent a room at the Express Sadovaya hotel in St. Petersburg.
The first attempts to equip Krivusha, clear and expand it, were made under Elizaveta Petrovna. However, the construction of the new canal was successfully completed only under Catherine II. Therefore, the first name of the channel is Ekaterininsky.
If the Griboyedov Canal is considered the most famous in St. Petersburg, then the Obvodny Canal is the largest. It starts from the Neva at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra and reaches Yekateringofka in the area of the Gutuevsky Bridge.
Initially, Obvodny was built with one important purpose - it was supposed to protect the city from floods. However, this idea did not work, and then the canal was turned into an important shipping route.
The picturesque Swan Canal, flowing through the territory of the Summer Garden, got its name for a reason. Back in the 18th century, snow-white swans chose it, choosing the canal as their home.
And before the ditch, there was a small swampy Lebedinka river, which was improved, made deeper and thus saved the garden area from constant flooding due to groundwater.
Admiralteysky originates from the Kryukov Canal and flows into the Moika River, flowing off the coast of Admiralteysky Island and New Holland.
In the 18th century, the canal served only one purpose: ship timber was transported through its waters from the warehouses of New Holland to the Admiralty. However, in the 19th century it became shallow and ships could no longer navigate it.
If you decide to rent a room at the Express Sadovaya hotel in St. Petersburg, then, in addition to Griboyedov, you can walk along the embankment of another canal - the Kryukov canal.
First, a canal was dug between the Neva and Moika, connecting the two rivers and creating another waterway for small ships in St. Petersburg. However, a little later, it was decided to extend Kryukov to the Fontanka, build granite embankments along its waters and clear all the marshy areas that surrounded it.
